Asphalt Shingle Roofing
Asphalt shingle roofs, more commonly referred to simply as shingles, are made up of a fiberglass base coated with asphalt and granules. Shingle roofs are available in a variety of colors and styles.
Shingle roofs are one of the most common roof types, partly due to their affordability over other roofing types. They are also easier to install than other roof types like metal roofs as well as slate roofing, which require skilled professionals for proper installation.
Shingle roofs typically last 10 to 15 years in Texas – and up to 30 years in more moderate climates.

Types of Asphalt Shingle Roofing
3-Tab Shingles
Basic, flat, and affordable. Offers a simple, uniform look. Rated for up to .75″ hail 60 MPH wind speed – rated for this.
At Tarrytown Roofing, we do not install 3-tab. It’s a marginal cost difference for architectural shingles and provides much more durability.

Designer Shingles
Higher-end shingles that resemble premium materials like slate or cedar, but are more affordable.
Designer shingles are rated the same as Class 3 and Class 4 shingles, but durability depends on the shingle itself.

What are the pros and cons of shingle roofs?
Shingle Roofing Advantages
Affordability
Shingle Options
Quick Roof Installation, Replacement
Shingle Roofing Disadvantages
Shorter Lifespan
In Texas, because of more extreme weather conditions, like heat and hail, the lifespan is typically 10-15 years. In moderate weather, shingle roofs can last up to 30 years.
Impact Storm Resistance
Shingle roofing does not provide the same durability as other roof types when it comes to storms. It’s unable to withstand hail, strong winds, heavy rain as well as other roof types, for example metal roofing. It is also not as heat and UV resistant as other roof types.
Less Eco-Friendly
Asphalt shingles have more of a negative environmental impact than other roof type, for example tile roofs. They cannot be made from composite recycled materials and are often not recyclable at end of life.
